RECONSTRUCTION OF TEMPORO-MANDIBLAR JOINT ANKYLOSIS WITH MULTIPLE FACIAL DEFORMITIES

Abstract
Because of increasing speed, number of Automobile and newly developed industry, facial bone fracture more frequently occurred and cause severe facial deformity.

Although T-M joint ankylosis is rare, in the majority cases, bony ankylosis of the T-M joint is due to trauma, infection or comvined of both.

A restricted diet, impaired speech, a micrognathic asymmetrical facial appearances and possible respiratory problem may result in serious physical and psychological disabilities.

And because of inability to carry out dental hygiene, dental caries are usually advanced. It is generally agreed that surgical intervention is the treatment of choice.

Authors have experienced 7 patients (8 cases) of the moderate to severe degree of T-M joint ankylosis who have received the silastic sheet and temporal fascia interposition after condylectomy, from March 1985 to September 1986.

We had a improvement of mouth opening without complication.

This paper reviews our experiences of cases of T-M joint ankylosis combined with other types of injury.
